Specific gravity, pH, protein, glucose, ketones, bilirubin, blood, urobilinogen, nitrite and leukocyte esterase.

If any of the following criteria are met, a microscopic exam will be reflexed:

Color Any color other than Yellow
Clarity ≥ Slightly Cloudy
Blood ≥ Trace
Protein ≥ 1+
Nitrite Positive
Leukocyte esterase Positive
Glucose ≥ 1000mg/dL
Bilirubin Abnormal
  

Refrigerated specimens in screw cap container received >8 hrs but <24 hrs from collection will be resulted with a comment: "Specimen exceeds standard time for testing"

Colllect a freshly voided urine; midstream clean-catch or catheterized

  

Transfer specimen to a BD Urinalysis Preservative Tube. The tube has a minimum fill of 7-10 mL; 10 mL is preferred.

Screw cap plastic container (non sterile or sterile)

If a BD UA transport tube in not available, or there is insufficient specimen, transport the entire specimen in the collection container.

 

 

  

BD Urinalysis preservative tube (preferred):

Ambient - 72 hours

Screw cap plastic container:

Refrigerated - 8 hours

 

  
  • Improper labeling (unlabeled or mislabeled)
  • Delay in transport
  • Leaking container compromising the specimen
  • Improper storage/transport temperature
