Detection and quantitation of BK virus plasma or serum specimens as an aid in the diagnosis and management of BK virus infections.

Immediately following collection, mix sample thoroughly by gently inverting 8 - 10, times to prevent clotting

  
  1. Centrifuge specimen within 24 hours of collection
  2. Transfer plasma to a Screw-cap polypropylene frozen transport vial/tube - 4mL (LabCorp), labelled as EDTA plasma
  3. Freeze
  

Frozen (preferred) - 6 months

Refrigerated - 8 days

Ambient - 48 hours

  
  • Quantity not sufficient for analysis (QNS) 
  • Leaking or broken tube
  • Inadequate storage or transport
  • Whole blood
  • PCR testing cannot be added on to a sample that has been opened and/or used for other testing. If the sample has already been used for testing, a new specimen will need to be collected.
