Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization

Identifying patients with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia and other hematologic disorders who may be responsive to imatinib mesylate.

The Platelet-derived growth factor receptor-beta (PDGFRB) produces a tyrosine kinase involved in cell proliferation. PDGFRB has over 30 known partner genes, however the 5;12 translocation involving ETV6 is the most common. Patients with this translocation often have associated hypereosinophilia.

This test can be ordered individually or as part of an Eosinophilia FISH Panel (see the individual panel test for more details).

Bone marrow aspirate

Bone marrow aspirate:

Collect bone marrow aspirate in a sterile Sodium heparin (Na hep) syringe and transfer to a sterile vial/tube

- or -

Collect bone marrow in sterile syringe (non-heparinized) and transfer to a Dk green Sodium heparin (Na hep), no gel

5 mL

3 mL

Transfer aspirate from syringe to transport container.

Submit entire specimen unspun.

Sterile tube/vial

or

Dk green Sodium heparin (Na hep), no gel

Bone marrow core
Sodium heparin (Na heparin) whole blood
Touch prep slides

Bone marrow core:

Submit in sterile tube/cup filled with sterile culture medium, sterile Hanks Balance Salt Solution (HBSS) or sterile saline

Sodium heparin (Na heparin) whole blood:

Dk green Sodium heparin (Na hep), no gel

Bone marrow core: 10 mm
Sodium heparin (Na heparin) whole blood: 5 mL

Immediately following collection, mix sample thoroughly by gently inverting 8 - 10, times to prevent clotting.
