Pleural:

Pleural fluid LDH to serum LDH ratio ≤ 0.6 or less than 2/3 the upper limit of normal serum LDH is consistent with transudative effusions, while pleural fluid LDH to serum LDH ratio > 0.6 is consistent with exudative effusions.

Peritoneal:

Ascitic fluid LDH may be useful in differentiating secondary Bacterial peritonitis from spontaneous bacterial peritonitis when at least two of three criteria are met in ascites fluid:

  • Total Protein > 1.0 g/dL
  • Glucose < 50 mg/dL
  • LDH > upper reference limit for serum

Fluid:
Pericardial, peritoneal or pleural

Sterile container

1.0 mL

0.5 mL

  1. Centrifuge for 5 -10 minutes to remove any cellular material
  2. Transfer supernatant to a False bottom plasma/serum transport vial/tube (AHL)
  3. Refrigerate

  • Source (indicate on order and on transport container)

Refrigerated - 3 days

  • Improper labels (unlabeled or mislabeled)
  • Hemolysis (some procedures)
  • Delay in transport
  • Improper storage temperature affecting results
