Percentage and absolute counts for:

  • Total T-cells (CD3+)
  • B-cells (CD3-/CD19+)
  • Natural killer (NK) cells (CD3-/CD56+CD16+)
  • Helper/inducer (CD3+/CD4+) T-cell subset
  • cytotoxic/suppressor (CD3+/CD8+) T-cell subset
  • Total CD45+ lymphocyte count
  • CD4:CD8 ratio

No pathologist morphology or interpretation is provided

  • Immunological assessment of normal individuals and patients having, or suspected of having, immunodeficiency
  • Initial screening and follow up monitoring of patients with primary immunodeficiencies
  • Assessment of immune reconstitution post hematopoietic cell transplantation
  • Screening for gross quantitative anomalies in lymphocyte subsets in infection or malignancies
  • Any clinical scenario where enumeration of major lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood is indicated

This test is not intended for the detection of phenotypically aberrant lymphocytes or blasts; for the detection of aberrant lymphocytes or blasts, a peripheral blood morphology should be ordered

EDTA whole blood

4.0 mL

1.0 mL

Immediately following collection, mix tube thoroughly by gentle inversion, 8 - 10 times, to prevent clotting

  • Submit whole blood specimen in lavender (EDTA) tube
  • Do not spin

Whole blood:

Lavender (EDTA), 4mL

Ambient (strict) - 72 hours

  • Due to gradual cell degradation over time, testing within 24 hours is strongly recommended. However, specimens up to 72 hours will be accepted.

Refrigerated - NO

Frozen - NO

  • Wrong container (anticoagulant or solution)
  • Improper blood/anticoagulant ratio
  • Delay in transport
  • Improper storage
  • Interfering substances
