Prostaglandin D2 is a major prostaglandin produced by the brain and by mast cells, and plays a role in vasodilation ("niacin flush") and in the development of allergic diseases such as asthma and alopecia.
Aspirin, indomethacin, or anti-inflammatory medications should be discontinued, if possible, at least 48 hours prior to collection.
The only acceptable sample type is serum collected in a red top tube. Transfer specimen to a plastic transport tube before freezing. Store and ship frozen immediately.
