Labelling instructions:
Must be identified as Cord blood

Newborn born at Allina Health must include the following ID information on the specimen tube:

  1. Mother's LAST name followed by BB (for boy) or BG (for Girl) and Mother's first name.
  2. For Multiples births, after the BB or BG, provide an additional identifier in order of birth: A, B, C, etc.
  3. The collection date and time, and A# of the collector must be on the tube.
 
For Reference Lab cord blood samples:
  1. Label with Baby's first and last name, MRN or date of birth, and identify as cord blood.
  2. The collection date and time and collector's initials must be on the tube.

Sample should be obtained no more than 24 hours prior to testing but may be used up to 3 days post collection. Testing of older specimens may show decreased antibody reactivity.

Clinical and Interpretive info

  

The ABO and Rh typing indicates the presence of 2 of the various blood group systems. The identification of antigens in the ABO and Rh system has r application in the determination of the mother's candidacy for Rh immune globulin therapy.


The direct antiglobulin test (DAT) is a screening test for antibodies present on an individual's red cells and is used to investigate hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN)
