Specimen
Fasting specimen is preferred.
Heparin plasma
Dk green heparin (Li or Na), no gel
0.5 mL
0.2 mL
Immediately following collection, mix sample thoroughly by gently inverting 8 - 10 times, to prevent clotting
- Spin
- Transfer plasma to a Screw-cap polypropylene frozen transport vial/tube - 4mL (LabCorp), labelled as the appropriate plasma type
- Freeze within 45 minutes of specimen collection
EDTA plasma
Immediately following collection, mix sample thoroughly by gently inverting 8 - 10 times, to prevent clotting
- Spin
- Transfer plasma to a Screw-cap polypropylene frozen transport vial/tube - 4mL (LabCorp), labelled as EDTA plasma
- Freeze within 45 minutes of specimen collection
Clinical information is needed for appropriate interpretation. Additional required information includes:
- age
- gender
- diet (e.g.TPN therapy)
- drug therapy
- family history
Frozen (preferred) - 1 month
Refrigerated - 72 hours
Ambient - 24 hours
- Specimens exposed to more than one freeze/thaw cycle
- Specimen outside of posted stabilities
