Diagnosing protein-losing enteropathies

Specimen

  
Serum and Stool, 24 hr collection
  
  
Serum - 1.0 mL and 24 hour stool collection
  
Serum - 0.5 mL and 1.0 mL homogenized feces from a 24 hour collection
  

Serum:

Blood must be drawn during the stool collection period.

Immediatley following collection, mix sample by gently inverting 5 times


Feces:

  1. Collect a 24-hour fecal collection
  2. If no specimen is obtained within 24 hours, extend collection time to 48 to 72 hours
  3. Document time frame

  

Serum:

  1. Allow sample to clot for a minimum of 30 minutes
  2. Spin sample within two (2) hours of specimen collection
  3. Transfer serum to a Screw cap transfer vial/tube (Mayo T914)
  4. Freeze

Stool:

  1. Freeze
