Reflex culture based on Urine Microscopic findings of >=6 WBCs indicating a higher likelihood of a urinary tract infection. WBC <=5 has a good negative predictive value for urine culture with low likelihood the urine will yield a uropathogen in significant numbers.
This test is not intended for patients where a UA only is indicated.
The reflex test should not be ordered for patients in whom a urine culture is indicated regardless of urinalysis findings, such as those being evaluated for asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy, patients undergoing urinary tract procedures, or kidney transplant recipients.
