Placental alkaline phosphatase

  • All IHC stains will include a positive control tissue

  • Useful as a general screening marker for germ cell tumors and is positive in most
  • Classic seminomas/dysgerminomas are almost all PLAP positive
  • Spermatocytic seminomas are usually negative for PLAP
  • Embryonal carcinomas are usually (95%) positive for PLAP
  • Teratomas may or may not stain positively for PLAP
  • Endodermal sinus tumors are usually positive for PLAP
  • Choriocarcinomas typically are positive for PLAP
  • Intratubular germ cell neoplasia usually stains positively for PLAP
  • Various somatic carcinomas, including those of breast, lung, GI tract, ovary, prostate and bladder origin, have been reported to be positive for PLAP on occasion
  • PLAP positivity has also been reported in partial and complete hydatiform moles

Note: There is cross-reactivity of this antibody with intestinal alkaline phosphatase.
Staining of striated muscle with PLAP has been observed and reported.
