Rapid detection of Staphylococcus aureus from wounds or surgical sites with simultaneous detection of the mecA gene associated with Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aures (MRSA).

High negative predictive values and positive predictive values compared to culture allows for earlier interventions for decision making related to antibiotic administration.

  • Assay can detect latent DNA associated with non-viable organisms (false positive) compared to culture in patients receiving antibiotics.
  • Detection is dependent on adequate sample collection.
  • False positive MRSA result may be generated when testing a mixed infection specimen containing both methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (MRCNS) and empty cassette methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (SA)
  • MRSA may not be detected when extremely high concentrations of a MSSA are also present.
  • Assay inhibition has been observed for specimens containing StaphASeptic, hydrocortisone, antibacterial hand sanitizer, or Merucurochrome.

  1. Cleanse surface of collection area with sterile normal saline and sterile gauze pad.
  2. Aseptically open the collection kit and remove the dual swabs.
  3. Using both swabs press down to collect fluid from the wound base, ulcer, or abscess.
  4. Place both swabs into the transport vial.

Press down on the cap until it is secure and the swabs are touching the sponge at the bottom of the vial.
