Treatment of CMV diseases includes three licensed drugs: ganciclovir, foscarnet and cidofovir. All three drugs inhibit the viral DNA polymerase through various mechanisms. Over time, as CMV makes copies of itself, the virus can change its structure. These changes may make CMV resistant to the effects of antiviral drugs. Therefore, it is important to detect resistance as quickly and accurately as possible for proper management of CMV infection.
