• Cadherin 17 is a highly specific marker for colon cancer, and is more sensitive (99% sensitivity) than CDX2 (89%)
• Cadherin 17 may help identify early Barrett's esophagus and is positive in esophageal adenocarcinomas (67-82%); it is more sensitive than CDX2 in labelling esophageal adenocarcinomas (75 vs 69%)
• Cadherin 17 has been reported in 23-90% of gastric adenocarcinomas; it is less sensitive than CDX2 in labelling gastric adenocarcinomas (44 vs. 62.5%)
• Cadherin 17 has been identified in 18-82% of primary pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas, and in 40% of metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (and is more sensitive than CDX2)
• Most neuroendocrine tumors of the small intestine and colon have been reported to stain positively for Cadherin 17
• This marker can help distinguish between primary urinary bladder carcinoma (Cadherin 17 positive) from urothelial carcinoma with glandular differentiation
• Cadherin 17 has been also identified in tumors of the bladder (adenocarcinomas), lung, endometrium, uterine cervix and ovary (CK7 and CK20 can help separate many of these from GI tumors)
• This marker is also a sensitive (81%) and highly specific (100%) marker for metanephric adenoma

Specifications

• Cadherin 17 is an oncogene involved in tumor invasion and metastasis and is a cell adhesion molecule
• Cadherin 17 is exclusively expressed in normal epithelial cells of small intestine, colon and pancreatic ducts; it is not seen in liver (except in intrahepatic bile ducts) and stomach (except in areas of intestinal metaplasia)
• It is more sensitive than CDX2 in identifying tumors of colorectal or esophagus origin. However, it is less sensitive than CDX2 in labeling tumors of stomach origin
