Hemoglobin, plasma-131

Test info

Hemoglobin, plasma

PHG

Hgb

This test useful for the evaluation of possible hemolysis including clotting/hemolysis associated with left ventricular assist devices. Measurement of free Hgb in plasma is of no practical value in the diagnosis of chronic hemolytic anemias.

Specimen

Lithium heparin (Li hep) plasma

4.0 mL

0.5 mL

  • Use no smaller than a 21 gauge needle for specimen collection
  • Immediately following collection, mix sample thoroughly by gentle inverting 8 - 10 times to prevent clotting

  1. Spin immediately
  2. Transfer plasma to a False bottom plasma/serum transport vial/tube (AHL)
  3. Spin a second time
  4. Transfer plasma to a new False bottom plasma/serum transport vial/tube (AHL), labelled as Li Hep plasma

Serum

Gold:

Immediately following collection, thoroughly mix sample by gently inverting 5 times

Gold:

  1. Allow sample to clot for a minimum of 30 minutes
  2. Spin immediately
  3. Transfer serum to a False bottom plasma/serum transport vial/tube (AHL)
  4. Spin a second time
  5. Transfer serum to a new False bottom plasma/serum transport vial/tube (AHL), labelled as serum plasma

Red:

  1. Allow sample to clot
  2. Spin immediately
  3. Transfer serum to a False bottom plasma/serum transport vial/tube (AHL)
  4. Spin a second time
  5. Transfer serum to a new False bottom plasma/serum transport vial/tube (AHL), labelled as serum plasma

Refrigerated

  • Improper labels (unlabeled or mislabeled)
  • Hemolysis (some procedures)
  • Improper anticoagulant or ratio
  • Delay in transport
  • Improper storage temperature affecting results
  • Improper container
  • Improper processing
  • Leaking container resulting in compromised specimen
  • Quantity not sufficient (QNS)
