Somatostatin is a neurohormone produced in the brain, hypothalamus and gastrointestinal tract. This test is used to diagnose somatostatin-producing tumors. Elevated levels are observed with somatostatinoma, medullary thyroid carcinoma and pheochromocytoma.

  • Draw in a pre-chilled Lavender (EDTA), 4mL tube
  • Immediatley following collection, mix sample thoroughly by gentle inverting 8 - 10 times, to prevent clotting
  
  1. Spin
  2. Transfer plasma to a Screw-cap polypropylene frozen transport vial/tube - 4mL (LabCorp), labelled as EDTA plasma
  3. Freeze immediately
  

Frozen (preferred) - 28 days

Refrigerated - 8 hours
