Patient should not have taken antibiotics or bismuth salts for at least 3 weeks prior to endoscopy or proton pump inhibitors 2 weeks prior to endoscopy, as these agents will suppress the growth of H. pylori, and may result in false negatives.

  • The recommended biopsy area is at least 2 cm away from the pylorus along the lesser or greater curve of the antrum.
  • Excise tissue that appears normal; avoid tissue that is eroded or ulcerated as H. pylori may be present in smaller numbers around those areas.
  
  1. Label specimen with date and time of inoculation and patient information.
  2. Push biopsy deep into well with media.
