Screening test for open neural tube defects. Detects 80% of open spina bifida and 90% of anencephaly.
This test does not provide screening for Down syndrome or trisomy 18.
Specimen
- Open spina bifida screening is offered for gestational ages 15.0 - 23.9 weeks
- Optimal gestational age is 16.0 - 18.9 weeks

Specimens must be collected before amniocentesis.
Immediatley following collection, mix sample by inverting 5 times
- Allow blood to clot for a minimum of 30 minutes
- Spin within two (2) hours of sample collection
Pour off is not advised.
