Urine, 24 hr
  
Two (2) 50 mL aliquots
  
  • When test is requested, give patient a labelled 24-hour urine jug. Keep aliquot containers in the lab.
  • Communicate to the patient to be sure to return their collection to the same site that the 24-hour urine jug was provided, to ensure utilization of the complete kit.
  • Collect a single 24-hour urine collection without preservative.

How to collect a 24-hr urine sample

Refrigerate specimen throughout the collection period.

  
  1. Measure the total volume
  2. Mix well
  3. Transfer two 50 mL aliquots of the collection to two (2) screw cap plastic containers, (one without preservative and the other with HCL preservative)
  4. Write total volume of 24 hour collection on aliquots with other clinical information on each container
  5. Freeze immediately
