Differential diagnosis of acute or recent infection from past infection with human parvovirus associated with erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), aplastic crisis, and fetal infection.
Immediately following collection, thoroughly mix sample by gently inverting 5 times
Gold serum separator (SST) tube
Ambient (preferred) - 14 days
Refrigerated - 14 days
Frozen - 14 days
Freeze/thaw cycles - stable x3
Enzyme immunoassay (EIA)
IgG: < 0.9 index
IgM: < 0.9 index
IgM antibodies are detectable two weeks after exposure. IgG antibody production usually occurs 18 to 24 days after exposure. The presence of IgM antibodies to parvovirus B19 provides definite evidence of recent infection.
