Serological testing to differentiate Herpes Types 1 and 2, as an indication of past or recent infection with HSV 1 or HSV 2 in individuals >6 months of age Serologic tests for HSV have low specificity and should NOT be ordered in asymptomatic patients who do not have a history of genital lesions. The positive predictive value for true infection is as low as 50%. There is no confirmatory test. Given these limitations, and the lack of specific treatment interventions for asymptomatic individuals, the anxiety and disruption of personal relationships that can be associated with a positive test result outweigh the potential benefits of screening. CDC does not recommend HSV testing for patients without symptoms. [UpToDate, CDC guidelines]
