Stool:

  • Collect specimen in clean container
  • Recommended:
    • Three (3) specimens for parasite exams, collected two (2) days apart, each in a separate vial.
    • No more than one (1) specimen/day.
  
  • Transfer to an EcoFix vial within one (1) hour of collection
  • Fill to the "fill line" and mix well
  • Do not overfill EcoFix specimens will be rejected if refrigerated or overfilled
  

EcoFix vial

  
Duodenal drainage, small bowel fluid, gastric fluid, liver fluid/aspirate. Sputum (endotracheal suction or deep cough), tracheal aspirate, bronchial washing, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), bronchial brushings or urine
  

Duodenal drainage, small bowel fluid, gastric fluid, liver fluid/aspirate:

  • Must be examined within 2 hours of collection.
  • If this is not possible, the specimen should be preserved in ECOFIX for later examination.

Urine:

  • For Trichomonas detection in male urine, the first morning specimen is recommended.
    • Urine for Trichomonas is acceptable within 24 hrs of collection, but optimally within 1 hr of collection. Transport at ambient (room) temperature.
    • For Trichomonas detection in female urine, the optimal test is the Trichomonas amplified probe (8940/LAB8940)
  • For Schistosoma detection, a random specimen collected about, or shortly after, noon is recommended.
    • A 24 hour unpreserved specimen is acceptable.
    • The specimen should be collected in a sterile container and refrigerated until examination.
    • Urine is acceptable within 24 hours of collection
  

Duodenal drainage, small bowel fluid, gastric fluid, liver fluid/aspirate:

  • Must be examined within 2 hours of collection. If this is not possible, the specimen should be preserved in ECOFIX for later examination.
  • Mix one part specimen with 3 parts ECOFIX. This may be done in a conical centrifuge tube or by removing the appropriate amount of ECOFIX from the ECOFIX vial before adding the 1 part of specimen.

Sputum (endotracheal suction or deep cough), tracheal aspirate, bronchial washing, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), bronchial brushings:

  • Place specimen in Ecofix vial to fill line within 1 hour of collection.

  • Improper label (unlabeled or mislabeled)
  • Time delay between time of collection and receipt of specimen
  • Improper transport container
  • Improper transport temperature
  • Inappropriate specimen type
  • Leaking container
  • Specimens contaminated with urine or barium;
    • Wait 7-10 days after adminstration of barium before collection.
