This is not the routine order and should be reserved for selected patients with these indications:
  1. Virologic detection of HIV-1 infection in infants younger than 18 months of age (an age group for which serologic tests are unreliable) born to HIV-1-infected mothers
  2. Early detection of acute HIV-1 infection in children and adults who may be receiving combination antiretroviral prophylaxis or preemptive treatment
  3. Determining eradication of HIV-1 in individuals receiving combination highly active antiretroviral therapies

Immediately following collection, mix sample thoroughly by gently inverting 8 - 10, times to prevent clotting

  
  1. Spin
  2. Transfer plasma to a Screw cap transfer vial/tube (Mayo T465), labeleld as EDTA plasma, within 6 hours of collection
  3. Freeze
  
  
Frozen (preferred) - 35 days
Refrigerated - 5 days
  
  •  PCR testing cannot be added on to a sample that has been opened and/or used for other testing. If the sample has already been used for testing, a new specimen will need to be collected.
