Tick identification limited to identification of the Ixodes deer tick, vector of Lyme disease.

  • With the exception of ticks, insects for identification should be preserved in 70% ethanol
  • Large maggots and other larvae should be placed in hot water (not boiling) to kill them and extend their bodies before being placed in 70% ethanol
  • Ticks being submitted for deer tick identification should be put in a container with moistened gauze to prevent drying of the tick
