Peritoneal:

Amylase activity in non-pancreatic peritoneal fluid is approximately equal to the serum amylase activity.

Ascites associated with pancreatitis typically has amylase activity at least 5-fold greater than serum.

Pleural:

Amylase activity in pleural fluid is typically less than the upper limit of normal serum amylase with fluid to serum amylase ratio <1.0

Fluid:
Pericardial, peritoneal, pleural or drain

  1. Centrifuge fluid for 5-10 minutes to remove cellular elements
  2. Transfer supernatant to a False bottom plasma/serum transport vial/tube (AHL)
  3. Refrigerate

  • Indicate source of fluid on the container and order
