Bile duct, bronchial, colon, endocervical, esophageal, gastric, renal pelvis, ureteral, urethral or other brushing.
  
  

Clinics/outreach clients:

  1. Place brush into CytoLyt ™ .
  2. Clip brush.
  3. Label container with two patient identifiers.
  4. If no CytoLyt ™ or sterile saline is available, gently smear specimen onto a clean glass slide labeled per instructions, How to label a slide for cytological examination. Place the labeled slide(s) into a slide carrier for transport.

Metro and Regional Allina Health Hospitals:

  1. Immediately place brush into labeled container of CytoLyt ™.
  2. Clip brush.
  3. Deliver to lab.
  4. If Microbiology testing is needed submit separate specimen in sterile saline and label for Microbiology.

If Fungus/Pneumocystis stain is requested indicate "Cytology and fungus stain"

Saline vial/tube (sterile)

Saline should only be used if no cytolyt available or if Micro is needed and it is not possible to collect a 2nd specimen in saline.

  • Pertinent clinical history/previous malignancy
  

Ambient

  
  • Unlabeled or mislabeled specimen
  • Unlabeled slide in a labeled slide container
  • Leaking specimen if label has been rendered unreadable
  • Slide broken beyond repair
