This assay is used to determine the number of international units (IU) of hepatitis D virus (HDV) RNA per milliliter in serum or plasma in known HDV-positive patients.

Serum

1.0 mL

0.5 mL

Immediately following collection, mix sample by gently inverting 5 times

  1. Allow sample to clot a minimum of 30 minutes
  2. Spin within 24 hours of sample collection
  3. Transfer serum to a Screw-cap polypropylene frozen transport vial/tube - 4mL (LabCorp), labelled as serum

Frozen (preferred) – 14 days

Freeze/thaw cycles - stable x3

Refrigerated – 14 days

Ambient – 3 days

  • Gross hemolysis, lipemia or visible microbial contamination
  • Frozen glass tubes

Labcorp (550653): R-NX

4 - 7 days

Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR)

Not detected: < 20 IU/mL

Assay range: 20 - 2,000,000 IU/mL

Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is an incomplete RNA virus that requires the helper function of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) envelope proteins (HBSAg) to replicate.  The HDV Real-time RT-PCR assay detects HDV RNA in serum or plasma
