Deletion 20q is a recurring abnormality in myelodysplastic (MDS) syndromes. Of note, a 20q- in the absence of morphologic criteria is not considered definitive evidence of MDS. According to current NCCN MDS guidelines, a 20q- result is classified as a good cytogenetics risk factor.

This test can be ordered individually or as part of the MDS FISH Panel. See the panel test for more details.

Bone Marrow aspirate

Bone marrow aspirate:

Collect bone marrow aspirate in a sterile Sodium heparin (Na hep) syringe and transfer to a sterile vial/tube

- or -

  1. Collect bone marrow in sterile syringe (non-heparinized) and transfer to a Dk green Sodium heparin (Na hep), no gel
  2. Immediately following collection, mix sample thoroughly by gently inverting 8 - 10 times, to prevent clotting

5 mL

3 mL

Transfer aspirate from syringe to transport container.

Submit entire specimen unspun.

Touch Prep Slides

Bone Marrow Core:

Submit in sterile tube/cup filled with sterile culture medium, sterile Hanks Balance Salt Solution (HBSS) or sterile saline

or

Whole blood:

Dk green Sodium heparin (Na hep), no gel

Bone Marrow core: 10 mm
