Direct venipuncture collection

1. Using a 21 gauge needle or larger (butterfly is acceptable), collect tubes in the following order:
1. One (1) clear top Vacutainer tube - partial fill 3 mL draw
2. Three (3) blue Greiner tubes - These are partial fill 2 mL draw tubes. Fill exactly to the black arrow on the tube; do not over or under fill.
3. One (1) lavender top tube
2. Immediatly following collection, thoroughly mix each sample by gently inverting each tube 5 times to prevent clotting
3. Additional tubes may be collected after these tubes have been collected.

Line draw collection

1. Discard the first 5 mL of blood from the line.
2. Ensure the catheter is free of clots.
3. Immediately transfer blood in the following order:
   1. One (1) clear top Vacutainer tube - partial fill 3 mL draw
   2. Three (3) blue Greiner tubes - These are partial fill 2 mL draw tubes. Fill exactly to the black arrow on the tube; do not over or under fill.
   3. One (1) lavender top tube
4. Immediatly following addition to the tubes, thoroughly mix each sample by gently inverting each tube 5 times to prevent clotting
5. Additional tubes may be collected after these tubes have been collected.

• Improper storage/transport temperature

The VerifyNow point-of-care device is available for monitoring patients on anti-P2Y12 therapy (clopidogrel and prasugrel). The extent of ADP-induced platelet aggregation is recorded as the Platelet Reactivity Unit (PRU) value, which is diminished by thienopyridine agents that block the P2Y12 ADP receptor.
