  1. Collect BAL or bronchial washing specimen directly into a labeled mucus trap or sterile Falcon vial/tube - 15mL.
  2. If Fungus/pneumocystis stain is also requested indicate "Cytology and fungus stain"
  

Submit entire specimen

NON-Metro hospitals/clinics, refrigerate for transport if for Cytology only. If specimen is to be shared with Microbiology DO NOT refrigerate.

For BAL for Alveolar Hemorrhage collect specimen as above and specify "BAL for Alveolar Hemorrhage".

  • Non-GYN Cytology request
  • Specify source/site as needed (e.g. LUL BR, Wash, LLL BAL)
  • Indicate pertinent clinical history/previous malignancy

  • Unlabeled or mislabeled specimen
  • Unlabeled slide in a labeled slide container
  • Leaking specimen if label has been rendered unreadable
  • Slide broken beyond repair
