Presence of systemic pathogenic fungi may be demonstrated in respiratory specimens. Significant isolates are: Coccidioides immitis, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Histoplasma capsulatum, Aspergillus fumigatus, Cryptococcus neoformans and any mold repeatedly isolated from specimens of the same patient.

The most commonly encountered yeast in the sputum is Candida albicans, which may exist in the oral cavity without disease production.
