Prolactin Macroadenoma
  

Useful for quantifying prolactin in serum specimens where the high-dose hook effect is suspected (e.g., presence of pituitary tumor with symptoms of prolactinoma and lower than expected serum prolactin concentration).

  

This test order is restricted to endocrinologists.

  

A pituitary adenoma should be identified by imaging studies prior to ordering this tes

  
Serum

(Note: This volume does not allow for repeat testing.)
  
  • Draw between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. (levels subsequently increase).
  • Immediately following collection, mix sample thoroughly by gentle inversion, 5 times
  

1. Allow sample to clot for a minimum of 30 minutes
2. Spin within two (2) hours of sample collection

 

  

Gold serum separator (SST) tube

  
Heparin plasma
  

Red serum vial/tube, 5 mL

Dk green heparin (Li or Na), no gel

 

  

Immediately following collection, mix sample thoroughly by gentle inverting 8 - 10 times, to prevent clotting

  

Red: 

  1. Allow sample to clot
  2. Spin within two (2) hours of sample collection
  3. Transfer serum to a Screw-cap polypropylene frozen transport vial/tube - 4mL (LabCorp), labelled as serum

Dk green:

  1. Spin within two (2) hours of sample collection
  2. Transfer serum to a Screw-cap polypropylene frozen transport vial/tube - 4mL (LabCorp), labelled as plasma
  

Refrigerate (preferred) - 14 days

Ambient - 7 days

Frozen - 14 days

Freeze/thaw cycles - stable x3

  

Samples collected in oxalate, EDTA, or citrate plasma
