1p36/LSI 1q25 and LSI 19q13/LSI 19p13

To aid in the differentiation of oligodendroglioma from astrocytoma brain tumors

  • Loss of both 1p and 19q, or 19q solely, is strongly correlated with gliomas of oligodendroglial morphology and is infrequent in gliomas of astrocytic origin
  • Gain of 19q is associated with gliomas of astrocytic origin
Malignant involved tumor tissue

Sterile Culture media, sterile Hanks Balance Salt Solution (HBSS) or sterile saline

Specimens should be immersed in culture media, HBSS or sterile saline within 1 hour of procedure

Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue block
4 unstained slides and 1 H&E or send formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded (FFPE) tumor block (an H&E will be cut and stained, and assessed by an HPA pathologist)

Specimens should be immersed in 0% neutral buffered formalin within 1 hour of procedure

  • Specimen should be fixed for 6 -72 hours

FFPE or 5 micron cuts mounted on positively charged slides

  • Cytogenetics oncology request
  • Document time in fixation – specimen should be fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for 6 -72 hours
