This procedure is used for the demonstration of nerve fibers and the presence of neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques in Alzheimer disease.

As aging occurs, most individuals develop alteration of neurofibrils in at least some neurons; the neurofibrils may become clumped or twisted.  In Alzheimer disease, tremendous numbers of the neurofibrillary tangles develop.
