Screening test for open neural tube defects. Detects 80% of open spina bifida and 90% of anencephaly.
This test does not provide screening for Down syndrome or trisomy 18.
Open spina bifida screening is offered for gestational ages 15.0 - 23.9 weeks (optimal gestational age is 16.0 - 18.9 weeks.)
Specimens must be collected before amniocentesis.
Collect in serum separator tube with gel barrier.
Pour off is not advised.

An interpretive report will be provided
A positive result means that more diagnostic testing may be offered to the pregnant woman to determine if a neural tube defect is present.
