  1. Smear the collecting swab on a glass slide
  2. Label slides with the patient name and 2nd identifier 
  3. Allow to air dry

Urine, random
  
  
Urine: 12cc
  

Urine Cytospin:

  1. Within 4 hours of collection, centrifuge 12 cc freshly voided urine as for routine urinalysis
  2. Decant
  3. Check the sediment.
    1. If there are more than 25 WBC/HPF, make two cytospin smears from the unspun, well-mixed urine.
    2. If there are less than 25 WBC/HPF, make two cytospin smears from the spun sediment
  4. Label slides; Include patient name, date, sample # and specimen type
  5. Refer to Cytospin Operating Procedure. Always add 1 drop of 22-30% Specific Albumin to the cuvette before spinning.

If no Cytospin is available, the urine sample must be delivered to the AHL Central Laboratory within 4 hours of collection or  transfer 10mL of sample to a Urine aliquot transport vial/tube - 10mL (AHL)

Urine aliquot transport vial/tube - 10mL (AHL)

           

  

Slides: Ambient

Sputum: Ambient - transport sputum as soon as possible

Urine: time sensitive

Refrigerated - 4 hrs

  
  • Improper label (unlabeled or mislabeled)
  • Delay in transport
  • Improper storage/transport temperature
  • Slides broken beyond repair
