1q gain and 1p loss are recurring abnormalities in plasma cell dyscrasia disorders including Plasma Cell Myeloma. This test can be ordered individually or as part of a Plasma Cell Dyscrasia FISH Panel (See the individual panel test for more details).

Bone marrow:

Collect bone marrow aspirate in a sterile Sodium heparin (Na hep) syringe and transfer to a sterile vial/tube

Collect bone marrow in sterile syringe (non-heparinized) and transfer to a Dk green Sodium heparin (Na hep), no gel

  • Only one specimen tube is required to perform all ordered cytogenetics testing.
  • The more testing requested, the closer to the optimal volume requirements is required.

1q gain is considered a high cytogenetics risk category in myeloma according to mSMART 3.0.

1p loss, although not part of the mSMART 3.0 risk stratification table, is known to be a poor cytogenetics risk factor in myeloma.

A loss of 1p or a gain of 1q finding when associated a trisomy result alone may ameliorate the risk stratification.
