Gross cystic disease fluid protein 15

  • Useful in identifying tumors of breast origin, although negative GCDFP-15 stains do not exclude possibility of breast carcinoma1
  • Approximately 77% of infiltrating ductal and 53% of invasive lobular carcinomas are GCDFP-15 positive
  • Useful in discriminating primary ovarian tumors from breast cancers metastatic to ovary2
  • Useful in battery with S-100, CEA, and ER in discriminating primary lung carcinomas from breast carcinoma metastatic to lung3

Specifications

  • GCDFP-15 is a protein identified in gross cystic fluid of breast
  • GCDFP-15 is expressed by some breast carcinomas (particularly those with apocrine differentiation), apocrine and eccrine glands, minor salivary glands, bronchial glands, and related tumors
  • GCDFP-15 is expressed in virtually 100% of cases of Paget’s disease of skin (extramammary)
  • GCDFP-15 expression has also been identified in prostate and rarely in ovarian, renal, and bladder carcinomas

Staining pattern

  • “Mosaic”*, cytoplasmic based staining.
    * mosaic pattern refers to very focal or patchy reactivity
