This test is the preferred test for the confirmation of a diagnosis of aminolevulinic acid dehydratase deficiency porphyria

  • Patient must be fasting 12-14 hours
    • Water may be taken as needed; no other liquids are allowed
  • Patient should abstain from alcohol for 24 hours


Sodium (Na) heparin whole blood

Place the specimen on wet ice immediately following collection


Submit entire tube, unspun and unopened.

Include a list of medications patient is currently prescribed
