Diagnose pheochromocytoma, a catecholamine-secreting tumor of the adrenal medulla

  
  • Patient should be fasting overnight (water and non-caffeinated soft drinks are permissible).
  • Patient should avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco and strenuous exercise prior to collection.

  1. Draw blood in chilled lavender-top (EDTA) tube
  2. Immediatley following collection, mix sample by inverting 8 - 10 times to prevent clotting
  
  1. Spin
  2. Transfer plasma to a Transfer vial/tube with cap - 12mL (LabCorp), labelled as EDTA plasma, within two (2) hours of sample collection

Note: If necessary, the whole blood sample may be kept refrigerated at 4C for up to two hours before centrifugation
