Sodium heparin (Na hep) whole blood

5 mL

2.0 mL

  • Only one specimen tube is required to perform all ordered cytogenetics testing
    • The more testing ordered, the closer to the optimal volume requirement is preferred
  • Immediately following collection, mix sample thoroughly by gently inverting 8 - 10 times, to prevent clotting

Dk green Sodium heparin (Na hep), no gel - 4mL

Bone marrow
EDTA whole blood (chromosome analysis study is not recommended for this specimen type)

Whole blood: (not recommended)

Lavender (EDTA), 4mL

Bone marrow: 10 mL (minimum 5 mL)

Bone marrow

Collect bone marrow aspirate in a sterile Sodium heparin (Na hep) syringe and transfer to a sterile vial/tube

- or -

Collect bone marrow in sterile syringe (non-heparinized) and transfer to a Dk green Sodium heparin (Na hep), no gel

Bone marrow:

Sterile vial/tube

Dk green Sodium heparin (Na hep), no gel

EDTA whole blood:

Lavender (EDTA), 4mL

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)

Normal or Abnormal with interpretation.

  • Deletion of 11q (including MLL) is classified as a very good cytogenetic prognostic indicator in MDS.
  • Deletion of 5q- and 20q- are classified as good cytogenetic prognostic indicators in MDS.
  • 7q- and +8 are classified as intermediate cytogenetic prognostic indicators in MDS.
  • -7 is classified as a poor cytogenetic prognostic indicator in MDS.
